Gaz Métro honoured for its leadership in sustainable development

Winner at the 5th Gala de reconnaissance et développement durable de Montréal

MONTREAL, April 12 /CNW Telbec/ - Gaz Métro is proud to announce that its leadership in sustainable development was honoured at the 5th edition of the Gala de reconnaissance en environnement et développement durable de Montréal. Organized by the Conseil régional en environnement de Montréal, in collaboration with the Conférence régionale des élus de Montréal and the Ville de Montréal, the Gala honours organizations that have distinguished themselves through innovative initiatives.

This year, Gaz Métro received an award in the "Companies and Industries" category for its Head Office renovation project, which obtained LEED CI, Silver certification at the end of 2010.

The project

Gaz Métro's Head Office, at 1717 du Havre in Montréal, has received the LEED CI, Silver certification (Improvement of commercial interiors) awarded by the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC).

The LEED certification Gaz Métro obtained concerns the renovation work done at its Head Office between spring 2005 and fall 2007. The work had three objectives: improve the quality of the work environment, control costs, and improve the energy and environmental performance of the installations.

Among other things, the improvements have resulted in a 20% reduction in water consumption, an annual decrease of $100,000 in heating costs, and a reduction of 1,000 tonnes of GHG emissions (CO2 equivalent) each year (equal to the annual emissions of almost 300 cars).

A sustainable commitment to the Montreal community
A partner from the outset in the Montréal Community Sustainable Development Plan, Gaz Métro is proud to contribute to the collective effort aimed at building a sustainable metropolis: a vibrant, prosperous, united, viable and democratic community.

"We are extremely proud of having received this recognition! It testifies to Gaz Métro's concrete commitment to sustainable development and also to the appropriateness of our choices. It also demonstrates that natural gas, the cleanest fuel and the principal source of energy used in our facilities, has economic and environmental advantages that are entirely compatible with a sustainable construction objective in Québec," Guylaine Lehoux, Vice- President, Growth Sector at Gaz Métro, pointed out.

LEED in brief

LEED, which stands for "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design," is an international benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings; it promotes an overall approach to sustainability.
