Garnier Canada shows its commitment to sustainability through a comprehensive 'industry first' solution for all personal care and beauty packaging waste

MONTREAL, June 29, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - Garnier Canada is making greener strides. The L'Oreal-owned brand is proud to announce an exclusive partnership with TerraCycle, one of the fastest growing green companies specializing in making consumer products from post-consumer materials. Garnier is the first in Canada to provide such a comprehensive solution to personal care and beauty packaging waste - a significant measure considering that personal care and beauty products account for 1/3 of all landfill waste worldwide.

Thousands of pieces of waste are expected to be collected by Garnier for the purposes of reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. Through the sponsorship of worldwide Personal Care and Beauty Brigade (individuals or organizations who sign up to participate), packaging will be collected and shipped free of charge to a TerraCycle facility outside Toronto.

This program, which will recycle or reuse personal care/beauty waste that would otherwise end up in the trash, not only addresses Garnier's packaging but rather the entire industry's waste as it accepts all personal care and beauty product packaging, regardless of brand. To further incentivize participants, Garnier Canada will contribute two cents per package returned to a school or non-profit of the collector's choice.

A TerraCycle partnership represents one part of Garnier's comprehensive sustainability efforts, which also include packaging improvements and science-driven innovation. Renewable, bio-derived plastics; cardboard packaging sourced from sustainably managed forests; in-store displays made with recyclable/recycled materials; and the use of more naturally-derived ingredients are all part of Garnier's environmental target.

Garnier is offering more and more - new, greener products. The first to roll out was Garnier Fructis Pure Clean - a biodegradable shampoo and conditioner expected to have far-reaching impact on the haircare industry. Pure Clean shampoo (94% biodegradable) and conditioner (92% biodegradable) are non-ecotoxic and leave behind less residue and suds. The weightless formulas contain no silicone, paraben or dye. The shampoo and conditioner bottles are also made of PET, the most widely recycled plastic, and include 50% post consumer recycled plastics. The Pure Clean range also includes styling products that feature 98% naturally derived styling with no additives while delivering ultra-clean hold. Pure Clean also encourages consumers to do their part. On-pack instructions promote recycling used bottles.

To promote its TerraCycle partnership and the launch of Fructis Pure Clean shampoo, conditioner and styling products, in June 2011 Garnier will welcome to Toronto the mobile marketing program called The Cleaner Greener Tour.  Its purpose is to educate consumers to think differently about waste, and to learn simple ways to make a positive impact on the environment. The tour which kicked-off in Times Square in New York City on April 11 and made its way across the US will be in Toronto on June 29-30 at Dundas Square. Garnier Brand Ambassadors will be onsite to pass out samples of Pure Clean Shampoo/Conditioner for consumers to take home and try.
