Gairdner Foundation Celebrates Opening of University of Saskatchewan International Vaccine Centre

TORONTO, Sept. 16, 2011 /CNW/ - The Gairdner Foundation congratulates the University of Saskatchewan's Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization on the opening of the International Vaccine Centre, the largest vaccine research facility of its kind in North America, and commends the foresight of the Canadian Government as well as the Saskatchewan Government and the City of Saskatoon for their support of the project.

The new containment level 3 InterVac facility enables scientists to research diseases such as hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, SARS and influenza. Scientists will also be able to address such diseases in animal populations, where many of them actually originate.

Dr. John Dirks, President & Scientific Director of the Gairdner Foundation, today attended the official opening of the new $140-million InterVac facility at the University of Saskatchewan.

"This is a rapidly developing field and InterVac will enable Canada to be a major contributor to the development of new vaccines, many of which could have a profound effect on diseases here and in the developing world," said Dr. Dirks. "We look forward to seeing the contributions to international medical science that will come out of this facility, and are excited by the continued growth of Canada's reputation in this field."

InterVac's innovative research program is an example of the type of scientific developments Gairdner promotes and fosters through their annual biomedical awards and year-round science advocacy. The Gairdner Foundation partnered with the University of Saskatchewan's Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization to host a major international symposium in October 2010, exploring the linkages between animal infections and human disease.

The Gairdner Foundation: Making Science Matter
The Canada Gairdner Awards were created in 1959 to recognize and reward the achievements of medical researchers whose work contributes significantly to improving the quality of human life. They are Canada's only globally known and respected international science awards, and Gairdner is the only national organization that consistently brings the world's best biomedical researchers to Canada to share their ideas and work with scientists across the country. In so doing, it enlarges networks and enhances Canada's international reputation, while providing a realistic and unbiased benchmark for Canada's leading scientists.
