CALGARY, May 17 /CNW/ - iSO Canada, a flooring company based in Calgary,
Alberta, is pleased to officially announce Opportunity International as
its Charity of Choice. The partnership between the national company and
international non-profit organization will focus on alleviating poverty
in Soledad, a "shantytown" in the city of Barranquilla, Colombia,
Soledad is home to nearly 500,000 people living in extreme poverty, many
of whom were forced to flee their homes due to guerrilla conflicts in
other parts of the country. Opportunity International enters areas like
this and offers small business loans, savings, insurance and training
so people can start or expand a business to provide for their families,
create jobs for their neighbours and build a safety net for the future.
In a statement to all iSO staff, Executive Chairman Paul Verhoeff said,
"we are very excited about all the possibilities this program will
create for people in Soledad in Colombia but also for all of us at iSO.
The cool thing about giving is that it not only helps those we give to,
but it enriches our lives as well."
The decision to unveil the partnership coincides with the launch of
"Opportunity CAN," a 40-day event celebrating Opportunity's 40-year
history empowering people to work their way out of poverty using
financial tools. During the event, Canadians are encouraged to use
their unique skills and creativity to fulfill a personal challenge or
host a meal that will help end poverty through microfinance.
