Financial Literacy Gets a Boost in the Right Direction

TORONTO, Feb. 9 /CNW/ - With the release of its Report and Recommendations, the Financial Literacy Task Force is moving a step closer to completing its mission "to strengthen the financial literacy of Canadians." The government must act quickly to implement the recommendations to ensure that Canadians from coast to coast have easy access to information that can lead to financial literacy. Credit Counselling Canada urges the Government to take immediate action on the options outlined in the report.

The first priority of the report, 'shared responsibility', is fundamental to the mission. Strengthened financial literacy cannot be achieved without everyone working together. "No one knows this better than the counsellors in the member agencies of Credit Counselling Canada who work every day to improve the financial knowledge of Canadians from coast to coast," stated Executive Director, Patricia White. "CCC has been able to assist thousands of Canadians with financial concerns but there are many more that need help."

New initiatives being proposed will mean that the most vulnerable Canadians, those in lower income brackets including students, seniors, newcomers and Aboriginal People, will receive much needed assistance from Credit Counselling Canada member agencies and other organizations. CCC members help those experiencing financial troubles and provide Canadians the skills and tools to make responsible financial decisions.
