TORONTO, April 6 /CNW/ - This week, Safeway was awarded the Association
of Fundraising Professionals' (AFP) 2011 Freeman Philanthropic Services Award for Outstanding Corporation.
Since 2008, the grocery retailer and thousands of its employees
nationwide have raised more than $3.2 million to help Easter Seals
provide camp experiences for Canadian children with disabilities.
Additionally, Safeway has contributed to special Easter Seals projects
such as specialized playgrounds for our camps in western Canada, and
has raised millions more for other causes including cancer research,
education, and food banks.
During its 48th International Conference on Fundraising in Chicago this week, the AFP
presented Larree Renda, Executive Vice President of Safeway and Chair
of the Safeway Foundation with the award at the organization's Awards
for Philanthropy Banquet.
"Canada Safeway supports causes that reflect our diverse workforce and
societal issues that are important to our customers and employees,"
said Chuck Mulvenna, President and Chief Operating Officer for Canada
Safeway. "We're very pleased to partner with Easter Seals as we make a
difference in the lives of youth living with disabilities."
The Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation Award honours a corporation
that demonstrates exceptional commitment to important causes through
financial support and encouragement, as well as the company's ability
to motivate others to take on leadership roles in their communities.
"Safeway's annual fundraising campaign for Easter Seals which surpassed
$1.3 million in 2010 is nothing less than remarkable," said Max Beck,
CEO of Easter Seals Canada. "This incredible support allows Easter
Seals to create independence building experiences and life changing
solutions so that people with disabilities can live, learn, work and
play in their own communities."
How Safeway Supports Easter Seals
One of the largest, most successful in-store events Safeway hosts is its
annual Helping All Youth Reach Their Full Potential campaign. All 214 Safeway stores across western Canada raise funds and
awareness to support Easter Seals services in local communities. This
year's campaign throughout the month of April gives customers the
opportunity to shop where it counts the most -- knowing their dollars
will change the lives of families living with disabilities.
Funds raised during the campaign are earmarked for Easter Seals camps
and camp programs to allow for the expanded use of these facilities by
children and their families living with a disability.
