East Algoma OPP awarded top bus safety honours

ELLIOT LAKE, ON, Nov. 9, 2011 /CNW/ - East Algoma OPP and Community Officer Christine Ouimet have a special connection to the CAA School Safety Patrol program - one that goes back more than 30 years.

It is because of the efforts of the East Algoma OPP (before 2003 The Elliot Lake Police Service) and community safety officers like Ouimet that the SSP program has been keeping school children safe for decades. The two have been helping educate students and create awareness on proper bus safety since 1978.

Officer Ouimet and the East Algoma OPP are being awarded the CAA School Safety Patrol Police Achievement Award today for demonstrating the kind of dedication and passion needed to make the program such a longstanding success in Elliot Lake.

"I am honored to be receiving this award on behalf of the East Algoma OPP, the regional school boards, AJ Bus Lines and the children who volunteer as Bus Patrollers," said Ouimet. "It is so encouraging to know that all the effort and support that goes into making this program work has benefited so many young people."

For many years, Ouimet worked alongside former CAA School Safety Patrol program champion, Patricia Curran, for whom the annual Patroller of the Year Award is named. Both women worked tirelessly toward making all aspects of road use safer for motorists and children going to and from school.

The City of Elliot Lake currently has five schools participating in the CAA School Safety Patrol Program with 80 active bus patrollers. The CAA School Safety Patrol program has been helping children get to and from school safely for over 80 years in over 800 Ontario schools with more than 21,000 volunteer patrollers.
