Dr. Patrick Smith leads Renascent into the Future

TORONTO, Nov. 17, 2011 /CNW/ - "I'm excited, honoured and ready for this challenge," says Dr. Patrick Smith about his appointment to CEO of Renascent and the Renascent Foundation. With this appointment, Renascent sends a clear signal that it intends to take a bold step forward within the addictions and mental health field in Toronto and nationally.

"Patrick has extensive experience from the frontlines to executive leadership," says Peter Armstrong, President and Chair of Renascent's Boards of Directors. "We are looking forward to working with Patrick to further establish Renascent as the leading abstinence-based alcoholism and drug addiction treatment provider in the country."

Dr. Smith has worked in various leadership capacities for the Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto and most recently the BC Mental Health and Addiction Services of the Provincial Health Services Authority of British Columbia.  He co-led the development of Canada's National Addictions Treatment Strategy and was project principal for British Columbia's 10-year Plan for Mental Health and Addictions.

"This is a good fit for me." says Dr. Smith.  "Renascent has a rich history of innovation and success.  They are committed to an evidence based treatment approach and they are completely client focused.  I can't wait to get to work."

Dr. Smith received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Nebraska, with a specialization in addiction studies and a minor in children and families.  He studied at the Yale University School of Medicine, the University of Toronto's Rotman Executive Programs and was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. In 2009 and 2004, Dr. Smith joined the delegation to the United Nations Committee on Narcotic Drugs on behalf of the Canadian Executive Council on Addictions.

"The direction given to me from the Board couldn't be clearer: lead us to the next level," says Dr. Smith. "The next level is about being recognized as the leading treatment program in Canada for individuals, families and workplaces impacted by alcoholism and drug addictions. We are already on the way."
