Don't abandon security screeners, says Canadian Airport Workers Union (CAWU)

TORONTO, Feb. 18 /CNW/ - The union representing security screeners at Pearson International Airport has accused the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) of trying to shred everything that hard-working airport security screening agents have gained over the past few years.

CATSA is implementing a new regional bidding process which could see the wages, benefits and jobs of security screeners put at risk.

"Our members have worked their hearts out to try and make our airports safer for passengers and everyone in the industry," said President Sumeet Datta, president of the Canadian Airport Workers Union (CAWU). "They're proud of the higher standards and conscientious performance they have brought to security at Pearson airport.

"We have raised the standards for security at Pearson by giving our members pride in the jobs they do through better training, working conditions, health and safety and wages.

"Our members are finally in a position to help provide a decent living for their families and loved ones. But at a stroke of the pen, CATSA could take that all away through its new bidding process.

"We urge CATSA to recognize the value of conscientious, motivated security personnel. After all, these are some of the most important people in the airport, where air safety is concerned.

"The government needs to recognize that our members provide a crucial service, that shouldn't be contracted to the lowest bidder," said Datta. "They deserve at the very least to know that everything they have worked so hard for will not be swept from under their feet."

The CAWU represents more than 1,500 security screening personnel at Pearson International Airport in Toronto.
