Distributel: CRTC Ruling Mixed for Canadian Consumers - Distributel Will Continue to Offer Unlimited High-Speed Internet Access with a Focus on Faster Speeds

TORONTO, Nov. 15, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - Distributel Communications, one of Canada's largest independent Internet Service Providers (ISPs), announced today that the decision of the Canadian Radio-Television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) regarding billing practices for wholesale high-speed access services including usage-based billing (UBB) contains a mixed outcome for consumers. However, Distributel affirmed its intention to continue to offer unlimited high-speed Internet plans across the country.

"Obviously, further analysis is going to be required. We're happy to see that the Commission opted to endorse a capacity-based billing model. We appreciate the flexibility that this model offers but are concerned about the rates that have been approved," said Mel Cohen, President of Distributel. "In short, this decision, which allows independent ISPs like us to provide unlimited use Internet plans, represents a small step forward both for consumers and small businesses."

Today's CRTC announcement reverses a proposal made by Bell in January 2011, whereby Canada's big Internet providers would have been free to impose UBB plans on the independent ISPs that lease their bandwidth. If UBB were imposed on small ISPs, the larger service providers could essentially determine how much Canadians could use the Internet. Today's decision enables independent ISPs like Distributel to continue to offer Canadian consumers unrestricted Internet plans with access to faster speeds.

For over 20 years, Distributel has been a trusted provider of Internet, home phone and long distance services in Ontario and Quebec, and recently began to provide its unlimited high-speed Internet in Western Canada (Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Richmond and Surrey). The company now boasts hundreds of thousands of satisfied customers and one of the largest IP networks in the country.
