Diabetes: Canada at the Tipping Point - Charting a New Path

MONTREAL, April 4 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Diabetes Association and Diabetes Québec have joined forces to produce a detailed picture of the state of diabetes in Canada. Their report, Diabetes: Canada at the Tipping Point - Charting a New Path, is nothing short of alarming: diabetes continues to rise steadily throughout the country. The full report presents the status of the situation in terms of the numbers of people with diabetes and a projection of these numbers out to 2020.

If we don't contain this virtual epidemic, Canada's health care system will suffer, as direct and indirect health costs explode. In the report, we have put together a picture of the governments' involvement in the fight against diabetes and suggested a variety of actions that we can take to prevent the disease and its subsequent complications.

In Québec alone, 563,000 people suffer from diabetes and another 200,000 are unaware that they have it. Nearly three billion dollars each year are spent in direct and indirect costs associated with the disease. Although the health care system is trying to contain the disease, there are always more pressing needs. The burden of this disease falls increasingly on the shoulders of people with diabetes and their families. Despite everything we have done so far to treat and educate the people affected, we have not been able to do enough in terms of primary and secondary prevention.

According to Serge Langlois, President and Executive Director of Diabetes Québec, "Diabetes must become a priority in Québec because, at the present rate, there will be more than 800,000 Quebecers with this disease 10 years from now."

The full report is available on the web site of Diabetes Québec at diabete.qc.ca. Also available on the web site: a summary of the report; a status summary of the diabetes situation in Québec; and the results of an Environics Research Group poll of a thousand Canadians, half of them with diabetes, which presents a picture of their fears and hopes with respect to the current situation.
