Delta Hotels and Resorts Launches Canada's Most Ambitious and Comprehensive Sustainability Program

MONTREAL, May 11 /CNW/ - Delta Montreal and Delta Centre-Ville today announced that Canada's largest independent hotel chain has launched Delta Greens, the most ambitious and comprehensive environmental sustainability program within Canada's hospitality industry. Delta's commitment is chainwide - every one of our more than 8,000 employees at our 46 properties is tasked with changing the way they work in order to reach the targets set out in the program. What's more, Delta will track the chain's progress against targets online, so that Canadians can follow Delta's progress in achieving its goals.

Delta Greens touches on every aspect of the hotel business - from guest services to construction to how we operate and maintain our properties to how we work with our suppliers and engage with our employees. Under the program, all hotels in the chain will commit to decreasing their energy consumption, carbon emissions and water consumption by 30% within five years, as well as increasing waste diversion by 25%.

The positive impact on the environment in Montreal as a result of the program will be significant:

  • The energy saved will be enough to power 2,177 homes for one year
  • The carbon dioxide reduced will be equivalent to taking 1,380 cars off the road for one year
  • The water saved will fill 149 Olympic swimming pools
  • The waste reduced will fill 68 dumpster trucks
  • The waste diverted will mean 78 fewer dumpster trucks going to landfill sites

"We've already begun making changes to the way we work so that we can achieve the ambitious goals set out in the program. The Montreal Delta hotels' latest green initiative combined the best of hotel service with forward-thinking environmental commitment. This summer, both hotels launched the Hybride Seulement parking spot - bright green parking spots located right at the front door of the hotels, which provide free VIP parking to guests who drive a hybrid vehicle.

Delta Montreal is also in the process of installing state-of-the-art energy management systems that will improve the hotel's energy efficiency, as well as replacing its heat pump and boilers with new energy efficient units.

Delta Centre-Ville is in the process of installing chillers and water towers to generate cool water for the ventilation systems which will drastically improve the hotel's energy efficiency. The hotel also automates its HVAC systems so that only rented meeting rooms are temperature controlled, saving energy in vacant meeting spaces. Delta Centre-Ville diverts food waste while contributing to the local community by donating all leftover food to La Tablee des Chefs and Dans la Rue. They also recycle used soaps by donating them to SavonEvolution, where they are melted down and reused as industrial soap.

Delta is also committing to sharing its journey towards increased sustainability with the public - via the "IRIS", an interactive tracking tool that stands for Integrated Rating Indicator for Sustainability. Delta's IRIS will be posted prominently on the company's website and updated three times a year in collaboration with Loop Initiatives, the sustainability integration and measurement consultancy that helped develop Delta Greens.
