TORONTO, June 13, 2011 /CNW/ - Drawing industry leaders, government representatives, consumer advocates and policy experts, the CSA Standards 2011 Annual Conference and Committee Week, currently being held in Victoria, B.C., is the first corporate event in Canada to be organized in accordance with the recently launched event sustainability management standard, CSA Z2010-10 Requirements and guidance for organizers of sustainable events. The standard involves a comprehensive approach to integrating sustainability considerations into event planning and management.

This approach includes identifying the environmental, social, and economic impacts of event related decisions and activities and taking action to ensure that these impacts are positive to the greatest extent possible. What this means is that CSA Standards has taken conscious steps to reduce overall resource consumption, effectively manage waste, select environmentally and socially responsible goods and services, mitigate climate change impacts, and engage stakeholders in contributing to event sustainability.

"By applying this standard, CSA will be helping to make this annual conference  environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable and will ensure that it is managed in an ethical and transparent manner," says Bonnie Rose, President, CSA Standards. "CSA is committed to sustainability and we want to ensure that CSA events maximize the value and experience gained by attendees while still balancing a high quality of life, environmental health and economic prosperity."

Concrete examples of actions that have been taken include selecting venues and accommodations with existing sustainability policies and practices in place, creating menus which feature organic and local items, and designing a companion program which includes ecotourism options. Emissions generated due to attendee travel are being accounted for and offset with the help of CSA's Climate Change Team through the CSA GHG CleanStart™ Registry. And Bullfrog Power is powering the event venue with renewable electricity sourced from British Columbia made wind power.

The CSA Z2010-10 standard provides event organizers with a management framework for improving event sustainability and a tool for communicating to the public the actions that have been taken to do so. It is hoped that uptake of the standard throughout the Canadian events industry will drive enhanced sustainability performance of events and of the suppliers of the goods and services required to make them happen, making Canada an even more attractive destination in the eyes of the world.
