Creating Jobs Will Be Job One For Re-elected Ontario Liberals

Hudak Damaging Ontario's Ability To Attract Jobs With Attacks On "Foreign Companies"

LONDON, ON, Sept. 29, 2011 /CNW/ - Ontario Liberals have a plan for helping Ontarians weather economic turbulence and focus on job creation by continuing to invest in clean energy and attract foreign investment.

"Tim Hudak's reckless plan to rip up the Samsung agreement would cost 200 families in London their jobs — he should come here and look in their eyes and explain to those people why he'd cancel the jobs that's giving them a new start," said Premier McGuinty. "They don't understand why their jobs and the industry they work in has become Tim Hudak's latest scapegoat."

The Ontario Liberal Plan has delivered 20,000 new clean-energy jobs for Ontario families and is on track to create 50,000 by the end of 2012, Premier Dalton McGuinty announced today.

Samsung C&T is opening four manufacturing plants in Toronto, Tillsonburg, Windsor and London, investing a total of $7 billion to create 16,000 jobs.

"Tim Hudak's attacks on 'foreign companies' and his vow to 'rip up' contracts may make some of the right wing elements in his party happy, but it's a real problem for Ontario's economy," said Premier McGuinty. "He's damaging our reputation as a safe place to invest and that means he's not only killing 50,000 clean energy jobs, he's also putting a lot of other jobs at risk."

For the past two years, the Financial Times of London ranked Ontario second only to California in North America when it comes to attracting foreign investment, and number one when it comes to turning foreign investment into jobs. Other foreign investments the Ontario Liberal government has helped attract include:

  • Kellogg building its first new plant in North American in over 20 years in Belleville
  • Toyota making its RAV-4 electric vehicle in Woodstock and
  • Hanwha built a plant in London to make kitchen countertops.

"My priority has been to do everything possible to attract foreign investment to our province because it means jobs for families so they can build a good life," said Premier McGuinty. "Now is not the time for experimentation or political expedience. We need strong, steady leadership. Only the Ontario Liberals have a plan to move us forward, together."
