Convenient Access to Pharmacy Services Now Available in Remote and Rural Communities

OAKVILLE, ON, Sept. 22, 2011 /CNW/ - PCAS™ Patient Automation Services Inc. (PCAS) today announced it has begun rolling out PharmaTrust® MedCentres™ in remote and rural communities in Ontario. The state-of-the-art MedCentres are pharmacist-controlled, user-interactive remote prescription-dispensing units that will revolutionize the delivery of professional pharmacy services, allowing for greater access to pharmaceutical care previously unavailable in many communities across the province. The first rural MedCentre was installed at the Curve Lake First Nation Health Centre, located north of Peterborough, Ontario.

"Making professional pharmacy care accessible for people in remote and rural locations, including the residents of Curve Lake and others like them, is at the very core of our business," says David Gibbins, executive chairman of PCAS. "At a time when the healthcare landscape is changing and people expect more personal and convenient access to services, PCAS is able to deliver solutions that offer innovative, personalized care that promote excellence and efficiency in healthcare delivery."

This new type of pharmacy provides convenient healthcare services and pharmaceutical care to currently underserviced, remote areas in Ontario. The PharmaTrust MedCentre installation at Curve Lake Health Centre is a trailblazing example of the enhanced collaboration between innovative technologies and healthcare professionals with the ultimate goal of improved patient-focused health outcomes that should be available in all communities.

PharmaTrust began its commercial deployments in July 2011, and expects to have 40 MedCentres in the market before the end of 2011. Patients can fill their prescriptions at convenient times and speak directly with a pharmacist about their prescription and medication history. Home delivery service for prescriptions will soon be available in select areas.

"This is a great day for the people of Curve Lake First Nation," said Chief Keith Knott, Curve Lake First Nation. "I've always believed, that in order to be a good leader one must do a lot of observing.  I have observed a vital need to provide our people with the best access to care possible. We now have immediate access to professional pharmacists who will provide care to those who need it."

The Government of Ontario passed regulations in March 2011 to allow remote dispensing - a milestone that PCAS was instrumental in achieving. With the new regulations in place, PharmaTrust - PCAS' technology and manufacturing division - will begin mass production and distribution of the MedCentre units to meet growing demand from communities across Ontario in need of access to local pharmacy services and care. The Ontario College of Pharmacists is responsible for inspecting and approving the location and installation of each MedCentre.

Once installed, operation of PharmaTrust MedCentres will be managed in one of a variety of manners. Currently, most MedCentres will be operated by Touchpoint Pharmacy - a division of PCAS, and a fully accredited pharmacy based in Oakville, Ontario. In future, MedCentres may be operated by large retail, small-chain or independent pharmacies. The newly installed MedCentre at Curve Lake will be operated by Touchpoint Pharmacy.
