Condition critical for Canada's health care system

Canadians cherish their medicare. But new international studies wonder why - first in a six-part series from Maclean's magazine

TORONTO, Jan. 20 /CNW/ - It's an emergency situation: A recent international survey of developed countries puts Canada dead last in timeliness and quality care. In another study, Canada ranked 25th among 34 countries, just ahead of Slovakia, just behind Portugal. For those Canadians who have been left waiting for hours on end in an overcrowded emergency department, they don't need a survey to tell them there is a crisis.

It seems that Canadians' still-entrenched pride in our health care system is largely delusional. What's happened to our national dream?

Maclean's Vancouver bureau chief Ken MacQueen investigates in this week's cover story, the first in a six-part series called "System Critical." He analyzes the surveys, talks to lay people and physicians across Canada and finds the sorry state of our emergency wards is just one indicator of the trouble in our health care system.

The "System Critical" series in Maclean's is tied to a series of town hall meetings hosted by Maclean's called "Health Care in Canada: Time to Rebuild Medicare," held in conjunction with the Canadian Medical Association. The first sold-out event takes place in Halifax on Wed., Jan. 26 and will be broadcast live by CPAC. The conversation on health reform will continue in the coming months in the magazine and at town halls across the country.
