Colleges applaud credit transfer system

TORONTO, Jan. 17 /CNW/ -The Ontario government's announcement of a credit transfer system is a good first step towards saving postsecondary students time and money, says Colleges Ontario, which represents the province's 24 public colleges.

"We look forward to this system becoming operational as soon as possible," said Anne Sado, president of George Brown College and member of the credit transfer steering committee. "Our research shows that a coordinated system of credit transfers would produce savings of more than $26,000 for a typical college student who transfers to university. This represents considerable financial savings for students, not to mention the time and frustration saved by not having to repeat courses."

An independent study completed for Colleges Ontario revealed that a provincial investment in a robust credit transfer system could have a financial benefit of approximately $50M once fully implemented.

Sado added that with an aging demographic and the new knowledge economy, it will be critical for Ontarians to have higher skills through postsecondary credentials.  "One way to support this result is through a robust, efficient and transparent credit transfer and credit recognition system," she said.

"We are pleased with the measures announced today," said Tony Tilly, president of Fleming College and chair of Colleges Ontario.

"We know the path through postsecondary education is no longer linear - students attend a variety of institutions and enter at different points. A credit transfer system is essential to accommodating this reality in a fluid, transparent manner, saving both students and taxpayers time and money."

Colleges Ontario is the voice of Ontario's 24 colleges of applied arts and technology. Ontario colleges serve about 200 communities throughout the province, delivering a wide range of career-focused education and training programs to more than 200,000 full-time and 300,000 part-time students.
