CGA-Canada buoys accounting research with doctoral funding

VANCOUVER, Nov. 15, 2011 /CNW/ - Two Certified General Accountants (CGAs) have each been awarded $10,000 grants to fund academic research projects as part of their doctoral studies.

Muriel Dufour is pursuing a PhD at the École Nationale d'Administration Publique.  She is researching the transfer of financial resources between organizations in the face of natural disasters. She aims to advance the understanding of accounting and finance transfer processes, and to develop standardized models aimed at facilitating operations and improving the effectiveness of emergency procedures. Ms. Dufour is a member of l'Ordre des CGA du Québec.

Esther Maier is pursuing a PhD in general management at the Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario. Her research is building on her 15-year career as a finance executive in the film and television industry. She is exploring how accountants and non-accountants use budgets and other financial practices to coordinate their day-to-day activities in a sector characterized by collaborative work processes and multidisciplinary teams. Ms. Maier is a member of CGA Ontario.

Under its Doctoral Funding Program, the CGA-Canada Research Foundation provides up to $10,000 a year, for a maximum of three years, to up to three CGAs interested in pursuing a PhD in accounting and auditing-related fields. The CGA-Canada Research Foundation is a registered charity that promotes education and research into accountancy.

"We know that research is critical to the development and evolution of the accounting profession," said Anthony Ariganello, President and CEO of CGA-Canada. "Our Doctoral Funding Program supports important research, while helping CGAs to establish themselves in the academic research community, where they can continue to contribute."
