Certified Management Accountants of Ontario recognizes transformative leadership at the 2011 CMA Creative Leadership Award

TORONTO, June 17, 2011 /CNW/ - Certified Management Accountants (CMA) of Ontario recognized the creative vision of an Ontario CMA member at its annual Creative Leadership Award last night.

The 2011 Creative Leadership Award recipient is Matt Milovick, MEd, CMA, Vice‐President, Operations and Strategic Development and Interim Chief Financial Officer at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). Matt spearheaded the development of UOIT's new downtown location and with that helped to revitalize Oshawa's core. Matt has created the foundation for a paradigm shift in Oshawa's economy, moving it from one rooted in the manufacturing sector to a more diversified knowledge-based economy.

"The vision Matt demonstrated through his leadership of UOIT's partnership with the City of Oshawa epitomizes what this award is about," said Merv Hillier, MBA, FCMA, C.Dir., CMC, President and CEO, CMA Ontario. "The importance of innovation in business today cannot be overstated and I am delighted to recognize Matt and his success in taking the CMA principles and creatively applying them to real business issues."

Due to its continued growth, UOIT was expecting to face a student space crisis in the fall of 2010. With a strong business case based on new tuition revenue and financial support from the City of Oshawa, Matt's efforts significantly influenced the revitalization of Oshawa's downtown core through the development of four different buildings totalling 175,000 square feet of classroom, student and library space. The combination of heritage buildings with new buildings connects Oshawa with its past while building for the future. An Oshawa native, Matt's transformative work will have long-lasting impacts on UOIT and the City of Oshawa, and has helped UOIT emerge as a community leader. In a study commissioned by UOIT, the estimated economic impact of UOIT's growth in the Durham region will be $1.1B over the next five years.

CMA Ontario's Creative Leadership Award recognizes creative, holistic thinking that fosters success through the use of imagination, innovation, intuition, and/or big ideas. The award recipient was selected by an esteemed panel of judges: Victoria Davies, CMA, Chief Financial Officer, Knightsbridge Human Capital Solutions and 2009 Creative Leadership Award winner; Murray Lindo, CMA, Assistant Deputy Minister & Provincial Controller (Acting), Ontario Ministry of Finance; Steve Maich, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Canadian Business Magazine and Kevin Stolarick, Research Director, The Martin Prosperity Institute.
