Centraide wants to raise 59 million dollars

A daring goal: $4 million more to fight poverty and exclusion

MONTREAL, Sept. 23, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - Centraide of Greater Montreal hopes to raise $59 million, which is $4 million more than last year, from the general public and corporations by December 15. This would be the largest increase in several years. The announcement was made at noon today during the official launch of Centraide's annual campaign, which raises funds for many agencies that help the neediest in Montreal, in Laval and on the South Shore. This ambitious goal aims to re-establish the campaign's growth in order to address important needs in the Greater Montreal area, where one person in six lives in poverty.

"The money raised by this campaign will be invested carefully and intelligently in Greater Montreal's neighbourhoods by Centraide's team and its volunteers. These social investments will go towards supporting families in periods of crisis, fighting school dropout, preventing delinquency and suicide among youth, welcoming and supporting newcomers, breaking the isolation of the elderly, and meeting other pressing needs," said Pierre Beaudoin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Bombardier. Mr. Beaudoin chairs Campaign 2011 with Heather Munroe-Blum, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University. "Needs are great, but together we can change things for the better," added Mrs. Munroe-Blum. "Our challenge for the next 12 weeks is to make people realize that these needs are very real and we have to act now."

The goal was announced at noon today at Centraide's March of 1,000 Umbrellas, which marked the launch of its 37th annual campaign. Tens of thousands of marchers, including employees and business leaders, volunteers, community agency representatives and people who are helped, held up their umbrellas to symbolize the assistance that Centraide and its network of 360 agencies provide to vulnerable people.

"I salute the spirit of the tens of thousands of volunteers and donors who will pull out all the stops in the coming weeks to raise and contribute funds," said Michèle Thibodeau-DeGuire, President and Executive Director of Centraide of Greater Montreal. "I also admire the courage of those who feel abandoned, but carry on in their efforts to overcome their difficulties, as well as the dedication of the agencies that help them day after day and only wish they could do more."

Centraide will be able to rely on the mobilization of 23,000 volunteers to solicit donations. As well, some 600 workplace presentations by community agency spokespersons and awareness activities will be organized. A daring new advertising campaign, involving the participation of 17 personalities and artists, has been developed by Publicis under the theme "Underneath, we are all the same." These ads aim to send a strong message that will put poverty back in the spotlight while urging people to come together to fight it. Centraide will benefit from the support of the major radio, television and display advertising networks in conveying these messages.

Centraide Campaign 2011 will run until December 15. People in the workplace are encouraged to give generously through payroll deduction. Those wishing to make a donation can also call Centraide at 514 288-1261 or visit the "To make your donation" section of its website at www.centraide-mtl.org.
