Capital One Volunteers Partner with Canadian Nonprofits for 'One Week' Associate Volunteer Initiative

Volunteers will serve the community during week-long company effort

TORONTO, May 18 /CNW/ - Capital One Canada associates this week will join their colleagues in the United States and the United Kingdom in a week of volunteer activities as part of the company's 'One Week' associate volunteer initiative.  Capital One's 'One Week' program will run May 15-21, encompassing more than 140 volunteer opportunities in Canada. Capital One Canada associates will partner with local nonprofits that serve thousands of residents through a variety of community service projects.

As part of 'One Week,' Capital One Canada volunteers helped The Children's Storefront with exterior painting and rebuilding, as well as organization projects. The Children's Storefront recently reopened in a new location in February following a devastating fire in 2009 that destroyed the building and its contents. Capital One Canada supported the Children's Storefront's reopening with an $80,000 donation, which was instrumental in allowing the organization to build out a new space that includes an indoor play area and community kitchen. Since 1975, the Children's Storefront has played a vital role in the community, offering free services accessible to families with young children in the Annex neighbourhood of Toronto.

"Capital One Canada is proud to support The Children's Storefront and its mission to provide support to parents and young children through a warm, unstructured play environment," said Laurel Ostifield, spokesperson at Capital One Canada. "Our 'One Week' initiative is meant to bring together the time and talents of thousands of our associates to make an impact on our communities during one week, but our efforts don't stop there. Our associates are actively engaged in company-sponsored volunteer activities throughout the year."

Also in Toronto, Capital One Canada associates will help build the Spiral Garden Camp at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital - a summer camp facility for the young patients at the hospital and members of the community - prepare for summer. Associates will help create a unique space where children can take part in gardening, drama, arts projects, water play and nature education. A team of Capital One Canada associates also raised funds for the hospital through participation in the Goodlife Fitness Toronto Marathon's 5K Run/Walk this past Sunday.

"Capital One Canada has been a dedicated corporate partner to Holland Bloorview for several years.  We are delighted to have their employees volunteer with us as part of this exciting summer camp program for kids with special needs," said Robyn Sanford, Recreation Program Coordinator, Holland Bloorview. "Capital One employees will be instrumental in preparing the Spiral Garden Camp, an integral part of Holland Bloorview, for the summer sessions and will help us in our mission to create a world of possibility for children with disabilities."

Additional Volunteer Efforts

During 'One Week,' Capital One Canada associates will participate in several projects to address the needs of local communities. Other projects include:

  • Working with Second Harvest in Toronto to organize an internal food drive, ride along with a group of dedicated volunteers to collect and redistribute food, and sort perishable food items at its main site;
  • Giving a credit education presentation for at-risk youth in partnership with the National Junior Golf Academy - Youth Development Centre in the Jane Finch neighbourhood of Toronto;
  • Cleaning up and painting Burrows Hall Public School in Scarborough.

As a local business leader, Capital One Canada is committed to giving our children a strong foundation to succeed in life. We focus our community involvement activities in organizations and institutions that support financial education and social development for youth in the communities where we operate. 'One Week' is just one way that the company strives to make a positive impact locally.
