Canadian survey finds chocolate-covered bugs and Kim Jong-il easier to stomach than wireless bills

Mobilicity shows Canadians the love with $69 Unlimited Couple's Plan and 100% bill certainty

TORONTO, Feb. 7 /CNW/ - There's no love lost between most consumers and their wireless carriers. According to new research, 62 percent of Canadian mobile phone users would rather spend Valentine's Day eating chocolate-covered grasshoppers, cuddling with North Korean ruler Kim Jong-il and doing other gut-wrenching activities than opening their wireless bills.

The national poll was commissioned by Canadian unlimited wireless upstart Mobilicity, which today announced a $69 Unlimited Couple's Plan, its latest heart-warming way to help Canadians bring down the cost of wireless.

The $69 Unlimited Couple's Plan, valued at $120, features two unlimited talk, text and data plans (including BlackBerry® Internet Service) and is available for a limited time at Mobilicity stores and authorized agents across Canada.

"We're showing Canadians the love and providing a service that's long overdue with our unlimited plans and 100 percent bill certainty," said Mobilicity Vice President of Marketing, Sara Moore. "When people say they'd rather let Mike Tyson whisper sweet nothings in their ears than open their wireless bills, something's not right."

What would you rather do on Valentine's Day?

Of the almost 900 Canadian mobile phone users surveyed last week by Vision Critical/Angus Reid, 62 percent said they would rather do the following activities on Valentine's Day over opening their wireless bills:

  • Indulge on chocolate-covered grasshoppers (23%)
  • Kiss controversial rocker Courtney Love (17%)
  • Try to have a meaningful conversation with Jersey Shore's Snooki (13%)
  • Have sweet nothings whispered in their ear by former boxer Mike Tyson (7%)
  • Cuddle with North Korean ruler Kim Jong-il (2%)

The findings underscore growing widespread dissatisfaction with the expensive, extra fees and surprise charges Bell Mobility, Rogers Wireless and Telus Mobility customers commonly find in their monthly bills.

Canadian grievances with wireless companies grew by over 15 per cent in the last year, according to Canada's Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications Services. The Consumers Council of Canada also found that of the 60 percent of wireless customers who said they inspected their monthly service bills, 45 percent found up to three billing errors.

The results have been statistically weighted according to the most current education, age, gender and region Census data to ensure a sample representative of the entire adult population of Canada. Discrepancies in or between totals are due to rounding.
