Canadian-Founded Drake International Celebrates Its 60th Anniversary as a Provider of Talent Management Solutions

The company, widely recognized for introducing temporary staffing to the Canadian marketplace, was founded in Winnipeg in 1951

TORONTO, May 31, 2011 /CNW/ - On June 1st, 2011, Drake International employees in nine countries around the world will celebrate the company's 60th anniversary as a provider of Talent Management Solutions.

Drake International, founded in Winnipeg, Canada in 1951 by two young entrepreneurs, is widely recognized for introducing the concept of temporary staffing to the Canadian marketplace. Over the past 60 years, the company's portfolio has grown to include a suite of talent management solutions and HR technologies including permanent recruitment, skills testing, psychometric assessments, learning management systems, outplacement services, enterprise surveys, exit interviews, payrolling systems and more.

The company's first client in 1951 was the Hudson's Bay Company, then headquartered in Winnipeg. HBC remains a client to this day.

The company opened its first office outside of Winnipeg in Toronto in 1953 and expanded to all of Canada's major cities shortly afterward.  Drake International entered the US market in 1959, followed by the UK in 1960, Australia in 1965, and now operates in nine countries around the globe.

"In 1951, when my partner Jim Shore and I started the company that became Drake International, we weren't entirely sure how to describe the business we were in - it was a completely new concept," said Bill Pollock, Chairman and Co-Founder of Drake International. "Now, of course, we know that we were in the outsourcing business. We helped our clients to improve productivity and thus, profitability, by helping them to outsource their peak workloads. But an obsession with profit improvement is still at the heart of all of our talent management solutions. I still say that we're a profit improvement company."

This dedication to profit improvement for clients has brought widespread success to Drake International over the years. The company's entrepreneurial culture is still very much alive today, and employees are always on the lookout for better ways to accomplish their clients' objectives.  For example, in the 1950s and 1960s, in an effort to increase their placements of qualified candidates, the company encouraged clients to hire women, a practice that was not customary at the time. This contributed to a significant increase in female employment for the first time in Canada, while helping Drake International to accomplish its growth objectives. In the 1970s and 1980s, Drake International introduced to clients a new age of technology, through acting as a reseller of IBM, and also by developing business units such as Drake Computer Training and later Drake Prometric (which was acquired by Sylvan in 1995).  Today, Drake International is still innovating. Recent developments include the launch of Drake Global Tech in early 2011 and the development of a proprietary Talent Management System, which was successfully brought to market in 2010 and is now available worldwide.

In honour of Drake International's 60th anniversary, employees around the globe have contributed to a website featuring stories from the Drake archives, newspaper clippings, and photos as well as special recounts from employees themselves -including former employees, such as one woman who worked for Drake International in Toronto in the 1950s.
