Canadian Fertilizer Institute Encouraged by Government's Appointment of a Facilitator to Negotiate Agreements Between Shippers and Railways

OTTAWA, Nov. 1, 2011 /CNW/ - The Canadian Fertilizer Institute (CFI) is encouraged by an announcement made today by Transport Canada and the Canadian Government to appoint Mr. Jim Dinning of Alberta as the Facilitator engaged to assist railways and commercial shippers agree on the establishment of a fair and balanced commercial dispute resolution process and a service level agreement template. The appointment follows the issuance of the Rail Freight Service Reviews Panel's Final Report on March 18, 2011 and the Government's response to those recommendations.

The Canadian fertilizer industry has been anxiously awaiting this announcement and CFI has been calling on the Government to act. CFI is pleased that Transport Canada and Minister Denis Lebel have chosen a Facilitator.

"This new phase means we are getting closer to sustained improved performance of the entire rail supply chain, ensuring our product reaches Canadian farmers and coastal ports in a cost effective and efficient manner. The announcement is promising to the Canadian fertilizer industry and to our members," said Roger Larson, CFI President.

The government has consistently reminded Canada that they will put farmers first, and ensure the agriculture industry remains strong. CFI is urging the Government and Mr. Dinning to stay true to these commitments and to commence the facilitation process immediately so railways and shippers will have the tools needed to capture efficiencies and strengthen Canada's economy through profitability and greater competitiveness.

CFI looks forward to working with Mr. Dinning as he initiates the six-month facilitation process.
