Canada's Housing Co-ops Welcome Liberal Platform Commitment for Affordable Housing

OTTAWA, April 4 /CNW/ - "Canada's housing co-ops welcome the Liberal Party of Canada's commitment to create a new, long-term affordable housing framework for the country," said Nicholas Gazzard, Executive Director of the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada (CHF Canada).

The Liberal election platform, released April 3, included strong commitments for affordable housing providers. Canada's housing co-ops were pleased to see a $550 million increase in federal housing spending over two years, and a long-term commitment to work with provincial, territorial and municipal governments to create a new affordable housing plan.

"A long-term program could create more affordable co-op homes for Canadians," said Gazzard. "The new federal investments in housing will help the 1.5 million Canadians households in housing need. It will also pay dividends by reducing health care costs and increasing the well-being and competitiveness of our cities, which are the economic engines of our country."

"Canada's housing co-ops challenge other federal parties to make a similar commitment," concluded Gazzard.

CHF Canada is the national voice of the Canadian co-operative housing movement. Its members include over 900 non-profit housing co-operatives and other organizations across Canada.  More than a quarter of a million Canadians live in housing co-ops, in every province and territory.
