Canada's Housing Co-ops Disappointed with Lack of Reference to Addressing Housing Need in Throne Speech

OTTAWA, June 3, 2011 /CNW/ - Canada's housing co-ops are disappointed with the lack of reference to addressing housing need in Canada in the federal Speech from the Throne, said Nicholas Gazzard, Executive Director of the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada (CHF Canada).

While Gazzard was pleased with the speech's emphasis on priorities such as the economy and creating jobs, there wasn't any mention of Canada's staggering shortage of affordable housing. "Canada's housing co-ops are troubled about the significant challenges that lie ahead for the 1.5 million Canadian households (the equivalent of nearly four million Canadians) in housing need, which was outlined in a report (based on 2006 CMHC data) released by CHF Canada in 2009 titled The Dunning Report: Dimensions of Core Housing Need in Canada -Second Edition," said Gazzard.

During the 41st session of Parliament, CHF Canada intends to work with the new majority government and opposition parties alike on finding cost-effective and practical solutions to Canada's shortage of affordable co-operative housing. If key stakeholders, including provincial, territorial and municipal governments, cannot collectively address this ever-growing problem, the number of Canadians in housing need will only rise," said Gazzard.

On May 28, 2011 at CHF Canada's AGM in St. John's, over 600 delegates unanimously passed a resolution calling on all levels of government to help protect Canada's affordable co-ops, and to develop an accountability framework for federal spending on housing, to ensure better outcomes for nearly four million Canadians in need of decent housing they can afford.

CHF Canada is the national voice of the Canadian co-operative housing movement. Its members include over 900 non-profit housing co-operatives and other organizations across Canada.  More than a quarter of a million Canadians live in housing co-ops, in every province and territory.
