Canada Cup Floorball Championship celebrates the opening of the games

TORONTO, May 20 /CNW/ - Borje Salming, Toronto Maple Leafs Alumnus and Member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and Anthony Perruzza, Toronto City Councillor for Ward 8, will officiate over the official opening of the eighth annual Canada Cup Floorball Championship. The opening ceremonies begin at 3:00pm at the Tait Mackenzie Centre on York University's Keele campus at 4700 Keele Street in Toronto.

Floorball is a type of indoor hockey played professionally in countries like Sweden and Finland. In Canada, floorball is a popular high school sport and used in Hockey Canada's Skills Academies across the country for dry land training. Having received formal recognition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in December 2008, floorball is slated for its debut at the Olympics in the 2020 Summer Games.

The Canada Cup Floorball Championship was founded in 2004 as a way to bring a small group of North American floorball pioneers together. This tournament has evolved into an annual event with international appeal. Every spring, the floorball world turns its sights on Toronto to follow the Canada Cup, the undisputed crown jewel of North American floorball.  The 2011 Canada Cup is the eighth annual tournament and will feature over 60 teams and 700 players from across Canada and the United States.  Teams compete in eight different divisions, from Atom age youth players to Elite players.  In addition to the exciting game action, entertainment and activities will take place for the various fans and parents of players.

The tournament begins at 8:00am on Friday, May 20 with high school division action.  Games are held every 45 minutes through to Sunday May 22 with the elite division championship on Sunday at 2:00pm. The elite division championship will also be televised live on Rogers TV.

Mr. Salming is available to speak to the media from 1:30 - 3:00pm on location on prior to the opening ceremonies. Please see media contact information below.
