OFL's Ryan launches provincial election tour with support for striking London workers

TORONTO, Sept. 14, 2011 /CNW/ - OFL President Sid Ryan will be in London, Ontario, today and tomorrow to support workers at two high-profile strikes.  He will also kick off the OFL's provincial election tour at the London and District Labour Council (LDLC) meeting this evening.

At 4:00 p.m. today, Ryan will join with librarians and archivists at the University of Western Ontario (UWO) - mostly women - who are grappling with a long-standing pay gap of 20 per cent in comparison to colleagues at similar Ontario universities. Understaffing and workloads are also at issue for the members of the University of Western Ontario Faculty Association.

At 7:00 p.m. tonight, Ryan will speak at the LDLC meeting where he will take the opportunity to congratulate and endorse three local NDP provincial election candidates: Teresa Armstrong, London Fanshawe; Steve Holmes, London North Centre; Jeff Buchanan, London West.

Tomorrow, Thursday, from 7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m., Ryan will picket with OPSEU Local 109 members at Fanshawe College.  The employer has sunk to a new low, refusing to return to the bargaining table and, instead, continues to flirt with disaster as it calls on workers to cross the picket lines.

"We are delighted that Sid will be here to join with our labour council to support the striking workers," said LDLC President Patti Dalton, who will be at both picket lines. "The OFL will assist us in applying more pressure for the employers to return to the bargaining table."

London is the first stop in the provincial election tour in support of NDP candidates and the labour movement's and progressive organizations' vision for strong public services and economic and social justice for all Ontarians - workers, retirees, unemployed people, children, youth and seniors.
