ASC announces appointment of two new commission members

CALGARY, May 4 /CNW/ - The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is pleased to announce the Lieutenant Governor in Council has appointed Richard Shaw, Q.C., ICD.D and Fred Snell, FCA as members of the Alberta Securities Commission, each for a three-year term. They bring a combined wealth of experience and knowledge from the law, accounting and securities professions that will serve the ASC well in the undertaking of its responsibility to ensure confidence in the integrity of Alberta's capital market and protect investors.

Richard Shaw has close to 40 years of experience providing legal advisory services in a number of areas including boards of directors, independent and special committees, director and officer liability, corporate governance, shareholder rights plans, securities, and corporate finance.  Mr. Shaw is a former senior partner at McCarthy Tétrault LLP in Calgary and former Chair of the Calgary Chapter of the Institute of Corporate Directors. He is currently the Chair of the Board of Governors of Mount Royal University and sits as a director on a number of company boards.

Fred Snell has more than 40 years of experience in the accounting field with an extensive background in securities regulation, accounting, auditing and finance. A former partner at Ernst & Young LLP, Mr. Snell most recently held the position of Chief Accountant at the ASC from 2001-2009.  He was appointed a Fellow of the Chartered Accountants in 1998 in recognition of  his service to the profession.

Members of the ASC act as the board of directors for the organization, functioning as adjudicators of applications, disputes and enforcement proceedings before the Commission. They also approve recommendations for new or revised rules and policies applicable to the Alberta capital market.

The ASC is the regulatory agency responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted to foster a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and to protect investors.  As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators, the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.
