MONTREAL, May 27, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - Manon Gauthier, CEO of the Segal Centre for Performing Arts, the Segal Centre board members and the Segal team would like to join in congratulating Mr. Alvin Cramer Segal, O.C., O.Q. Chairman and CEO of Peerless Clothing and President of the Board of the Segal Centre for Performing Arts for his appointment as Officer of the Order of Quebec.

Mr. Jean Charest, Quebec Prime Minister announced today the appointment of 33 individuals to the National Order of Quebec. Created in 1984 by the Quebec Parliament under the law of the Order of Quebec, it is the height of Quebec's honour system. It recognizes those individuals who have made a powerful impact on Quebec through encouraging its growth and development in one or more sectors of Quebecois industry.

Among those individuals, this appointment recognizes Mr. Segal's significant contribution in business, as well as his dedication to healthcare, education and culture. Alvin C. Segal leads the world's largest men's fine tailored clothing company. A highly respected man in the apparel industry, he began working on the Peerless factory floor in 1951 and pioneered the introduction of the engineered suit into North America. When the US-Canada Free Trade Agreement loomed on the horizon, he had the foresight to build a state-of-the-art facility and led his company into the US market.  In fact, Mr. Segal played a pivotal role in negotiations leading to NAFTA. We owe him the new comprehensive Segal Cancer Centre at the Jewish General Hospital and the Segal Centre for Performing Arts.

For the past decade Mr. Alvin C. Segal, O.C., O.Q., a visionary and successful entrepreneur, has put his experience, time, heart and financial resources into championing cultural organizations in Montreal.  Mr. Segal was recognized on many occasions for his leadership and entrepreneurship. He was named Member of the Order of Canada in May 2002 and promoted to Officer of the Order of Canada in 2010, named Man of the Year by the Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal in 2010, awarded the 2006 Prix Arts-Affaires of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan and Conseil des Arts de Montréal.
