Alex Johnston joins Hockley Valley Resort as Executive Chef

Latest high-profile appointment secures Hockley's emergence as one of Ontario's most important culinary tourism destinations

TORONTO, Sept. 8, 2011 /CNW/ - Acclaimed Toronto chef Alex Johnston has joined Hockley Valley Resort as Executive Chef. In his new role, he will oversee all restaurant and culinary operations at the iconic hotel, golf and ski destination.

Alex Johnston was born and raised in the Little Italy neighbourhood of Toronto, and completed his culinary training at George Brown College. Upon graduation he spent a formative year cooking in Paris, where he was influenced by the passion behind France's regional cuisine. Most recently, Johnston has worked as Executive Chef and Owner of Provenance Regional Cuisine, a catering and retail food business that connects Torontonians with Ontario producers.

"Alex's decision to join Hockley Valley Resort is yet another indication that our garden-to-table philosophy is resonating well beyond the Hills of Headwaters region," said John Paul Adamo, President and Owner at Hockley Valley Resort. "I am pleased to welcome him to the Hockley family."

Johnston is also known for his work with Jamie Kennedy, the celebrated Canadian chef and local food movement champion. As Events and Catering Chef at JK Gardiner, and Chef of Operations at JK Gilead production kitchen, Johnston built relationships with family farms and artisan producers that form the heart of his cooking style.

"This is such an exciting time at Hockley Valley Resort. I am very excited to join the growing culinary team at the Resort and continue building on my work promoting sustainable and seasonal regional cuisine," said Johnston. "It is a rare opportunity to find a leading hospitality operation so committed to bringing quality local fare to all aspects of its food service outlets."

Johnston's arrival at Hockley follows the appointment of another renowned chef, Michael Potters. Potters will be overseeing a new and yet-to-be named high-end leisure restaurant, the latest in a series of transformations at the Resort. Hockley's recent makeover includes the addition of three new restaurants: Babbo, Tavola and Restaurant 85, as well as a two-acre fruit and vegetable garden which supplies almost all the produce and preserves for the resort's restaurants.
