CORNWALL, ON, May 27, 2011 /CNW/ - The Cornwall Regional Task Force (CRTF) made and assisted in four (4) contraband tobacco seizures in the following jurisdictions between May 11th and May 26th, 2011:

  • Three (3) seizures at the Cornwall Port of Entry (POE)
  • One (1) seizure in South Glengarry, Ontario.

These seizures resulted in the arrest of the following two (2) individuals who have been charged with Possession of Unstamped Tobacco, contrary to Section 32(1) of the Excise Act, 2001, and/or who are facing or have been charged under the provincial Tobacco Tax Act for possession of a tobacco product not properly stamped:

  • Kennedy Benedict (age 23) and Elizabeth Benedict (age 58), both from Akwesasne, Ontario

Elizabeth Benedict was attempting to cross into Canada at the Cornwall Port of Entry when CBSA officers located in her vehicle ten (10) cases of contraband cigarettes.  Ms. Benedict's first appearance is scheduled for June 21st, 2011 in Cornwall, Ontario.

The CRTF currently holds an arrest warrant for Kennedy Benedict for his involvement in this matter.  If anyone knows of his current whereabouts, they are urged to contact the CRTF at 613-937-2800.

ALSO, these seizures resulted in the arrests of three (3) other individuals who will be facing charges under the federal Excise Act, 2001 and/or the provincial Tobacco Tax Act for possession of a tobacco product not properly stamped.

Items Seized:

  • One (1) van, two (2) pickup trucks, and one (1) vehicle.
  • 2,000 re-sealable bags and/or cartons each containing 200 contraband cigarettes;
  • $994.00 in Canadian and US currency.

Sgt. Côté stated: "With the St. Lawrence Seaway opened for all area residents to enjoy, we will see an increase of contraband smuggling activity occurring on our waterways.  To assist us in maintaining security on the water, we are urging our local residents to contact us if they observe or overhear of suspicious activity occurring on the river and/or along the shoreline.  The CRTF can be reached by calling 613-937-2800 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477."

The CRTF is a joint forces partnership that includes the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canada Border Services Agency, Ontario Provincial Police, Ontario Ministry of Revenue and Cornwall Community Police Service.
