According to the Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC) database (2010) of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, there are estimated to be more than 1,700 missing or murdered Indigenous women in Canada. Recent estimates are much higher. Indigenous women are killed at six times the rate of non-Indigenous women. Violence towards Indigenous women and girls is preventable. About 67 per cent are murder cases (death as the result of homicide or negligence); 20 per cent are cases of missing women or girls.
