CALGARY, Feb. 19 /CNW/ - Calgary's Yuk Yuk's is re opening on Thursday,
February 26 in a brand new state of the art nightclub at Sam Switzer's Elbow
Calgary Yuk Yuk's is now owned by former oil patch entrepreneurs Hal
Metcalfe and Jim Weston. Metcalfe and Weston have spent the past 12 months
creating the new 250 seat club.
"Jim and I have been talking about getting into business together since
high school," said Hal Metcalfe. "When we were approached with the Yuk Yuk's
opportunity, our dream became a reality," he said. "We are excited and proud
to be bringing to Calgary audiences an authentic Vegas-style comedy
experience. We think this will be a real boost to Calgary's entertainment
scene," said Metcalfe. Metcalfe and Weston have spent a year and over $300,000
building Calgary Yuk Yuk's.
Mark Breslin, Yuk Yuk's founder will be in Calgary for the opening
weekend. "Calgary has always been a great market for us both in terms of our
club and talent development," he said, "We've been a fixture of the Calgary
comedy scene for 20 years. We've always believed that stand-up plays best in
an urban setting and being in the Elbow River Casino is a natural fit. From
the heyday of Vegas to modern show-palaces, comedy and casinos work well
together," he said.
Yuk Yuk's is the world's largest chain of comedy clubs with 14 Canadian
locations from coast to coast. The Edmonton club will open this spring.
Founded by Mark Breslin in 1976, Yuk Yuk's created the Canadian stand-up
comedy scene and was the launching pad for such international stars as Jim
Carrey, Howie Mandel and Norm McDonald. Yuk Yuk's production division has
produced highly-rated TV specials for CBC, A&E, TMN and The Comedy Network
including the annual Great Canadian Laugh Off. Its talent agency, Funny
Business, is the largest comedy agency in the country and books Yuk Yuk's On
Tour and numerous other shows and corporate functions across North America.
Just for Laughs, where many US network television and sitcom careers began,
has chosen Yuk Yuk's as the venue for its prestigious "Headliners" series
during their satellite festival each year in Toronto.
To celebrate the opening weekend, Yuk Yuk's Calgary will be presenting
two time Gemini nominee Nikki Payne. Headliners for March are Gerry Dee, star
of Last Comic Standing and Trailer Park Boys-The Movie; Emo Philips called the
best joke writer in America; Gemini Award Winner Jason Rouse and Steve
Patterson, host of CBC's The Debaters.
In March and April, Yuk Yuk's will be holding Wednesday night try outs
for a shot at comedy stardom on the Comedy Network's Great Canadian Laugh Off,
Canada's biggest open comedy competition, with a grand prize of $25,000.
