MISSISSAUGA, ON, April 16 /CNW/ - Young women: they are on the go all the
time. Before school, it's 7 a.m. cheerleading practice. In the afternoon, it's
gym class. And after school, they are dashing off to dance lessons, yoga or a
quick trip to the mall. And while, many of these activities promote positive
self-esteem and confidence, many young women don't have confidence in their

A recent Ipsos Reid survey(1) sponsored by Playtex Ltd. indicated 80
percent of girls 12-17 years of age consider themselves active but only 35
percent are "very confident" in their feminine protection. This may be because
61 percent - almost two-thirds of women 12-34 years of age - report they have
been embarrassed by a leak when their feminine product failed to fully protect
them. It could also be the reason 40 percent of girls 12-17 years of age are
losing out in participating in their favourite activities by avoiding, or
limiting, their involvement at times when they feel particularly vulnerable.

The survey, conducted in January, 2007, polled 1,085 women across Canada
aged 12-34 years. Women living in British Columbia rated the highest in terms
of being active at 77 percent, Alberta was a close second at 76 percent, while
women in Quebec were the least likely to engage in activities (47 percent).
The types of activities women said they tend to avoid during their period
include: "running/jogging" (27 percent) or "swimming" (27 percent), but many
others also point to "exercise/gym" (22 percent), "walking" (10 percent), and
sports in general (8 percent).
"Leaking through when you're on your period would be the most
embarrassing thing ever," says 17 year-old Veronica Skye, a Toronto high
school student and cheerleader. "It's something girls don't like to talk
about, but we all worry about it. And rather than risking humiliation, my
friends and I sit out. It's just so not worth it."
This may be one of the reasons why nine out of 10 women said they would
be willing to try a new product to avoid potential leaks during physical
