Writs issued for 39th Provincial General Election

TORONTO, Sept. 10 /CNW/ - Ontario's Chief Electoral Officer confirmed
today that writs have been issued for the October 10 general election in
Ontario. "Today, I have forwarded writs of election to each returning officer
in Ontario's 107 electoral districts," said John Hollins.
Heading into the upcoming election and referendum, Elections Ontario has
introduced significant initiatives to increase elector awareness and access,
and improve operational efficiency, for example:

    - Improved maintenance and updating of the Permanent Register of
        Electors for Ontario
    - A comprehensive training program for Returning Officers and their
local staff to ensure consistent communications, processes and
        standards across the province
    - Public education about the two ballots electors can expect to receive
at the poll; one for choosing a candidate in the election and one for
choosing an electoral system in the referendum
    - A new public information web site to guide electors through the
registration and voting processes that includes a new section that
allows electors to confirm if they are on the Voters List
    - An expanded Call Centre to respond to telephone calls from the
        general public.

All Canadian citizens who reside in Ontario and who will be 18 years of
age or older on October 10 are qualified to vote in the general election and
the referendum on the electoral system.
