VANCOUVER, Jan. 28 /CNW/ - Used Books New Start
(www.usedbooksnewstart.org) is a national campaign created to raise proceeds
for Canadian and international literacy programs.
During the week of February 4-8, 2008, Canadian corporations and their
employees will be called upon to donate used books through a corporate book
drive event. In true partnership spirit, companies will assist by creating
awareness of the campaign and footing the bill for shipping the books to a
central depot after the week long campaign, while employees will be dusting
off those unwanted books at home that can be donated to a "new start".
The concept behind the Used Books New Start (UBNS) campaign is to collect
donated books which become remarketed through various web portals such as
Amazon, EBay and others. The net proceeds of remarketing will then be directed
towards local and global literacy programs.
"We have a real need in our world for supporting literacy programs." Says
Adam Hill, founder of UBNS. "I believe my success in life and career has been
largely attributable to my access to education and books. Can you imagine the
possibilities for our world if everyone could read? What emerging leaders
would we have developed by giving them a start with education? These are the
exciting questions I asked myself when I realized that making a difference is
not as hard as it may appear." Hill said.
UBNS will work with Better World Books (www.betterworldbooks.com) to
remarket the donated books from what is being touted as the world's largest
ever corporate book drive. Better World Books will contribute a minimum of 50%
of all donated book proceeds to the literacy programs that the UBNS committee
has identified for the 2008 campaign.
The literacy partners that UBNS will support from its first corporate
book drive include Room to Read and Canadian Library Association. Both of
these well grounded charities are committed to making a difference for
communities in need of literacy.
Companies and their employees can show their support by registering their
involvement on the UBNS website. Once registered, each company will be
regularly updated on the progress of the book campaign along with information
on how they can make the book drive week run smoothly in their office.
"We have a lofty target of raising 1 million books in our first corporate
book drive" says Adam Hill. "In reaching this goal we will be able to raise
approximately $1 million for our supporting literacy partners which is going
to make a measurable difference in our world."
UBNS is also calling upon national companies to show their support in
