World's Biggest Walk raises awareness for organ and tissue donation globally

Trillium Gift of Life Network encourages more Ontarians to register their
wishes to be an organ and tissue donor and talk to your family about your
    donation wishes

TORONTO, Oct. 22 /CNW/ - The World's Biggest Walk promoting organ and
tissue donation around the world will take place this Saturday October 25 at 8
a.m.
"This is truly a global effort," said Frank Markel, President and CEO of
Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN). "This walk symbolizes how important it
is for everyone, around the world, to start talking about organ and tissue
donation."
"There are too many people waiting for a transplant. Together, we can all
make a difference. We all have the power to save lives, register your wishes
to be an organ and tissue donor and talk to your loved ones about your
wishes."
Today, in Ontario there are 1723 men, women and children waiting for a
transplant.
The 5Km walk in Toronto will start at 8 a.m. at the Toronto General
Hospital (585 University Ave.). Other walks being held simultaneously
throughout Canada include: Ontario: London, Ottawa and Kingston; Alberta:
Calgary, Edmonton and St. Albert; British Columbia: North Vancouver and
Vancouver; Newfoundland: Portugal Cove; Quebec: Trois-Riveres; Saskatchewan:
Saskatoon. Other cities participating around the world include: Melbourne,
Australia; Tokyo, Japan and Paris, France.
"The lack of available organs for transplantation is a worldwide problem.
It is a thrill to know that people in Toronto and Ontario will be walking for
organ donation and transplantation awareness at the same time as thousands of
other people around the world," said Toronto resident, Amy Holdorf, who
received a living kidney transplant 14 years ago.
"I am extremely lucky to have received a kidney from my mother.
Unfortunately, many people will not be as lucky as I am and will die while
waiting for a suitable organ. I encourage everyone to get the facts on organ
donation, and to discuss their wishes with their families."
The walk is free and everyone is welcome to attend. For more information
