WinterCity Festival features free entertainment, parties, concerts and theatre on Nathan Phillips Square

    TORONTO, Jan. 25 /CNW/ - Toronto's WinterCity Festival offers a full
weekend of free programming on Nathan Phillips Square starting this weekend -
January 25, 26 and 27.
The 2008 WOW! Series program features the North American Premiere of two
of Europe's most innovative and visually compelling theatrical and artistic
troupes.
France's Cie Carabosse will transform Nathan Phillips Square into a
wonderland of warmth and light with "Nights of Fire," the gentle illumination
of towering metal sculptures housing 1,500 clay pots burning in unison (Friday
and Saturday evenings, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.).
Floating high above the crowd on one-metre-high stilts, Theater Gajes
from the Netherlands will present their award-winning outdoor theatrical
production of "Alice in Wonderland." Set to live music, this enchanting
interactive production will feature a colourful cast of characters and props
weaving their way through the audience on Nathan Phillips Square (Saturday and
Sunday afternoons, at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.).
Weekend afternoons in the RBC WinterCity Lodge provide great family
entertainment. Kids learn how to knit using hand-spun yarn from South America
to make their own scarves and other crafts with Wacky Wool Factory (Saturday,
January 26, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.). Bunch Family offers up Trick My Sled,
where kids stretch their creativity by decorating free wacky carpet sleds and
be the envy of the snow hill (Sunday, January 27, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.).
Friday nights in the RBC WinterCity Lodge feature some of Toronto's best
comedy. The Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival teams up with WinterCity to present
a four-hour mini-festival of Toronto's best sketch comedians at the Sketch
Comedy Showcase (Friday, January 25, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.).
The fun continues outside on the Nathan Phillips Square skating rink with
Tim Hortons Ice Breakers, a series of daytime skating parties for kids and
nighttime DJ skating parties for adults. The first weekend of afternoon fun
features the Mad Hatter's Skating Party (Saturday and Sunday, January 25 and
26, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.). Evenings will heat up the rink for adults and the
world's largest singles skating party at Skate 'n' Date with Meet Market
Adventures (Friday, January 25, from 8:45 p.m. to 10 p.m.).
RBC Flying Canucks, a one-of-a-kind trampoline performance combining the
best of freestyle skiing, snowboarding and acrobatics will demonstrate
high-flying maneuvers that have been performed at the Olympic Games and other
events around the world (Saturday and Sunday, January 26 and 27, and Saturday,
February 2, at 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.).
The WOW! Series is part of Toronto's WinterCity Festival presented by
RBC. A celebration of culture, creativity and cuisine, WinterCity is 3
festivals in 1: the WOW! Series at Nathan Phillips Square, the Warm Up Series
at Toronto's cultural and tourist attractions, and the ever-popular restaurant
promotion, Winterlicious presented by American Express. For more information
