Winners of RNAO Media Awards announced
TORONTO, March 14, 2017 /CNW/ - Journalists from CBC Radio's The Current and the Ottawa Citizen are among the big winners as the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) announces the recipients of its annual Media Awards.
Both news outlets garnered two awards in the competition, which celebrates outstanding journalism that shines a spotlight on nursing, health and health-care issues. Eleven awards will be handed out in total, in categories for print, radio, television and online media.
"It is our honour to recognize these outstanding journalists, who have worked diligently to share the stories of Ontarians on all sides of our health system," says RNAO President Carol Timmings. "Free and independent journalism is a pillar of our strong democracy, and we couldn't be prouder of our award winners."
Winners also include journalists from Global News, CTV, CBC Marketplace, Metroland Media, OZY Magazine, Peterborough This Week and the Woodstock Sentinel-Review. Winning stories tackled a variety of key health issues, including staffing cuts at an Ottawa hospital, the transgender community's struggle to access health care, and post-traumatic stress disorder among Ontario's first responders.
"Without the hours of research, interviewing and adept storytelling of these journalists, many of these stories may not have come to light," says RNAO Chief Executive Office Doris Grinspun. "As registered nurses, nurse practitioners and nursing students, we vow to continue to support Canada's superb news media."
Winners were determined by a panel of judges comprised of nurses and journalists. Awards will be handed out at the president's banquet following RNAO's 92nd annual general meeting on Friday, April 28 in Toronto.
