Winners Of Public Library Awards Announced



    Public Libraries Helping Build Skills, Enhance Learning, Manage
    Businesses

    TORONTO, Feb. 1 /CNW/ - Projects to enhance the job skills of rural
residents and increase the leadership skills of youth were among the award
winners recognized at the Ontario Library Association's annual conference.
    Culture Minister Aileen Carroll presented the Public Library Service
Awards to libraries in London, Port Hope, Brock Township and Seguin Township.
    "Our public libraries play a key role as community hubs of learning and
literacy," said Carroll. "Ontario's public library system is stronger and more
vital because of the initiatives recognized by these awards."

    The award winners are:

    
    -   The London Public Library for LOLLYPOP, a program to increase the
        literacy and leadership skills of youth
    -   The Brock Public Library for its Equi-Pass Program which provides
        low-cost digital learning opportunities to enhance employment skills
        for rural residents
    -   The Port Hope Public Library for its Open a BOOK, Open a BUSINESS,
        which expanded and promoted library resources to the business and
        agricultural communities
    -   The Seguin Public Library for its expansion project, increased
        collections, new computer and training area, and introduction of a
        ServiceOntario site.

    The government of Ontario invests over $28 million annually in Ontario's
public and First Nations libraries.
    The government created the Public Library Service Awards in 1985 to honour
innovative programs that improve literacy and promote lifelong learning and
library use.

                  2007 PUBLIC LIBRARY SERVICE AWARD WINNERS

    The Ontario government created the Public Library Service Awards in 1985
to identify and promote creative public library service ideas. The awards
feature small and large library categories in two separate awards: the
Minister's Award for Innovation and the Angus Mowat Award of Excellence.

    Minister's Award for Innovation

    This award recognizes successful new approaches to library service that
demonstrate a positive impact on the community. The recipient in the large
library category is:

    -   The London Public Library for LOLLYPOP, a program to increase the
        literacy and leadership skills of youth through creative expression
        and community building.

    The recipient in the small library category is:

    -   The Brock Public Library for its Equi-Pass Program which provides
        low-cost digital learning opportunities to enhance employment skills
        for rural residents, many of whom lack access to local learning
        centres and high-speed internet.

    Angus Mowat Award of Excellence

    This award recognizes performance and innovation in the delivery of a
public library service. The recipient in the large library category is:

    -   The Port Hope Public Library for its Open a BOOK, Open a BUSINESS
        initiative to develop, expand and promote library resources to the
        local business and agricultural communities.

    The recipient in the small library category is:

    -   The Seguin Public Library for its recent expansion project, increased
        collections, new computer and training area, and introduction of a
        ServiceOntario site.
