Windsor child to receive Fire Safety Award

TORONTO, May 27 /CNW/ - Bradley Vincent of Windsor will receive a Fire
Safety Action Award from the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council at the
Fire Safety Awards ceremony on June 3, 2009 in Toronto. The annual ceremony
recognizes outstanding contributions to fire protection and prevention in
Ontario.
In the early morning hours of December 20, 2008 nine-year-old Bradley was
awakened by a carbon monoxide alarm in his family home. After a brief
investigation, Bradley found there was no smoke or fire. Concerned with his
family's safety, to he awoke his parents to tell them about the alarm. Even
when his father told him to go back to bed, Bradley remained persistent and
persuaded them to call 9-1-1. It was later determined that, as a result of a
defective furnace, the levels of carbon monoxide in the home were dangerously
high and were creating a hazardous living environment.
"Bradley acted in an appropriate manner by treating the alarm seriously,
even though his father did not," said Ontario Fire Marshal Pat Burke. "This
incident stresses the importance of installing carbon monoxide alarms near
sleeping areas in homes to alert occupants to the presence of this deadly
gas."

Each year Fire Safety Action Awards are awarded to young children and
teenagers who have actively demonstrated fire safety behaviours they have
learned. Fire departments throughout the province nominated individuals and
organizations for this year's awards; 20 recipients were selected. The
Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Rick Bartolucci and
Fire Marshal Burke will present the awards at a luncheon ceremony at the
Sutton Place Hotel in Toronto.
