Web/Device Solution Focuses on Healthy Grocery Offers; Toronto's Sweet
Potato Grocery is First Pilot
TORONTO and CUPERTINO, Calif., Jan. 13 /CNW/ -- Wellness Heroes Inc., a
Toronto-based business dedicated to helping improve the health of mind, body,
spirit, community and planet, today launched an Internet-based service
offering paperless digital coupons, powered by Ecrio's MoBeam(R) barcode
service. The trial will take place at Toronto's Sweet Potato, a leading
organic grocer, with all redeemed coupons 'cleared' by industry giant Inmar.
The MoBeam solution is a small, keychain-based digital device that can
download coupons from a Website and then, with patented technology, "beam" a
small light to transmit specific barcodes directly into the laser scanner at
checkout. For this pilot, Wellness Heroes has assembled "green" and organic
coupons from leading consumer goods companies including Seventh Generation,
Kettle Chips, Neal Brothers, Liberte Organic Dairy and Nutrisoya. Sweet
Potato shoppers will be offered the loan of a MoBeam Greenthing-e(TM) device,
pre-loaded with coupons. At checkout, the shoppers simply "beam" selected
coupons to take advantage of multiple offers.
Robert Dunlop, Vice President of Strategic Alliances for Wellness Heroes,
says, "We are excited to launch the very first 'green' MoBeam device right
here in Toronto. The world benefits when we embrace emergent technologies and
green space in union. We call the device the "Greenthing-e".
"The pilot gives us a chance to test the solution in a live consumer
environment, giving The Sweet Potato shoppers a fun and enriching shopping
experience while saving them money -- it's a win-win for all parties. We
expect a successful trial here and will quickly roll out the product through
registered charities, which can use the Greenthing-e(TM) for fundraising
initiatives. General retail partners will sell the Greenthing-e(TM) at
checkout later this year, while Wellness Heroes continues to build
partnerships with participating retailers and vendors."
Charities will find the new device extremely helpful for driving
fundraising and awareness of their causes. Neil Hetherington, CEO of Habitat
for Humanity Toronto, says, "Habitat for Humanity Toronto is pleased to
partner with Wellness Heroes. By selling this great new product, we can raise
more funds for much-needed affordable housing"
"This offering is a breakthrough for digital, consumer-driven couponing,"
added Larry Loper, VP marketing for Ecrio, a Silicon Valley innovator in
mobile communications and commerce solutions. "It offers truly paperless
coupons and a method to redeem them at checkout with no change to installed
point-of-sale hardware. This truly is a first step toward eliminating paper
from the current 300-plus billion couponing system."
