Welcome Week activities encourage UWindsor students to get involved and explore campus and community

TORONTO, Sept. 1, 2011 /CNW/ - Thousands of new first-year students will soon arrive at UWindsor and there’s an entire week full of activities to welcome them. The emphasis of this year’s Welcome Week events is to better involve both commuter and residence students in campus life and to encourage more of them to explore and embrace the community that surrounds the campus.

Activities begin Sept. 4 with Residence Move-In Day. More than 1,300 students move into UWindsor's six campus residences in about six hours, from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Windsor Rocks! Xtreme Challenge is a week-long contest in which commuter students can enter teams and accumulate points to win a suite for an upcoming Windsor Spitfires game. Some of those events include:

  • A Rock Climbing competition in the Dillon Quad on Sept. 4 at 3:30 p.m
  • A Residence Cheer Competition in the Residence Quad on Sept. 5 from 10-11 a.m., followed by a tailgate party at the St. Denis Centre to prepare for the first football game of the season at 1 p.m. There will be face-painting, banner-making and other activities.
  • Adrenaline Rush and Minute to Win It in front of Memorial Hall on Sept. 6 from 11 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. There will be contests in large inflatables, jousting, giant Twister, booths, a barbecue and musicians.
  • The River's Edge Beach Party near the foot of the Ambassador Bridge on Sept. 6 from 4-6 p.m. Students can play volleyball with the men's varsity team, play inflatable bowling or go for a hayride through Sandwich town to get familiarized with the area.
  • The Campus Community Cleanup on Sept. 9 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Students will don gloves and take bags to clean up the campus as well as the surrounding community

Other highlights include:

  • A Campout on Campus in the quad on Sept. 4 from 9 p.m.9 a.m. Students will set up tents, spend the night and be treated to a pancake breakfast in the morning.
  • International Student’s Orientation Sessions in CAW Students Centre’s Ambassador Auditorium on Sept. 4 from 12-3 p.m., Sept. 5 from 11 a.m.1:30 p.m. and Sept. 6 from 9 a.m.  – 11 a.m.
  • Out on Campus will host a Queer Campus and Downtown Tour to find out about what’s “queer friendly” on campus and in the greater Windsor community. The tour will be held Sept. 6 from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. and will begin in Dillon Hall, Room 252
  • A Welcoming Celebration on Sept. 7 from 3 – 5 p.m. at the St. Denis Centre. This is a high-energy event where thousands of students will receive complimentary UWindsor sunglasses and pack the gym to find out why “The Future’s So Bright You Gotta Wear Shades.” There will be a draw for one lucky to student to win free tuition for the fall semester.
