"King of Classifieds" makes substantial gift to Dalhousie University

HALIFAX, Sept. 23, 2011 /CNW/ - Through a $3-million gift to Dalhousie University's Bold Ambitions Campaign, John McCall MacBain has established the MacBain Chair in Health Law and Policy to honour his late father. The addition of the MacBain Chair is expected to make Dalhousie the leader in health law and policy research in Canada and place the university among a small number of academic institutions with international impact in this field.

McCall MacBain is best known for having built a worldwide business of buy-and-sell magazines including Auto Trader, Buy and Sell, Bargain Finder and home TRADER. His global companies eventually spanned 20 countries and included more than 50 websites and 575 print title. Now based in Geneva, Switzerland, he oversees the McCall MacBain Foundation, whose mission is to "improve the welfare of humanity through focused grants in health, education and the environment." His first grants went to initiatives in Liberia to help rebuild a country ravaged by years of civil war.

"I have named the MacBain Chair in Health Law and Policy at Dalhousie University after my late father, Al MacBain, M.P., who was a 1951 Dalhousie law graduate," says McCall MacBain. "The aging of the Canadian population underlines the importance of this sector of the law. Dalhousie law school has a unique position of collaboration with the community to render unselfish public service. I hope that this Chair will take the needed leadership in this area of the public debate."

Health Law and Policy is a fast-growing area of practice with far-reaching legal and ethical impacts across many disciplines and tackling difficult topics such as: research involving humans; end of life treatment, policy, and practice; patient safety; privacy and confidentiality of health information; neuroethics; and public health emergencies.

The Dalhousie Health Law Institute was established in 1991 as an interdisciplinary Institute supported by and serving the Faculties of Law, Medicine, Health Professions, and Dentistry. One of only two such institutes in Canada, the Dalhousie Health Law Institute offers the first and only health law and policy specialization at the JD level. The Health Law and Policy Program at Dalhousie represents the largest course offering of its kind in Canada, and approval of new courses in public health law and in environmental and health regulation will further expand this offering. The creation of the first national neuroethics team, headed by Jocelyn Downie, builds capacity within Canada to deal with significant, novel, and pressing legal and ethical issues arising from recent advancements in the field of neurotechnology and neuroscience.

The $250-million Bold Ambitions campaign is the largest and most comprehensive in Dalhousie's history; focusing on student success and enrichment, interdisciplinary programs, and innovation and design. Its impact will deepen Dalhousie's capacity for excellence, pushing us further to achieve our vision of becoming the very best university in Canada.
