Wal-Mart Canada named a Best Employer for 50-Plus Canadians

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Nov. 21 /CNW/ - Wal-Mart Canada was today listed among
the nine best employers for Canadians age 50 and above, as identified by the
Workplace Institute and judged by a panel of professionals specializing in
mature workforce issues. As the only retailer on the list, Wal-Mart was
applauded for its training, recognition, and workplace culture. Specific to
its associates age 50 and up, the company is renowned for its creation of the
greeter role and more recently for its focus on providing retiring Wal-Mart
associates the opportunity to return as consultants, special project managers
or mentors on all matters of the business.
With more than 70,000 associates, Wal-Mart Canada is one of the largest
employers in the nation. Operating a growing network of nearly 300 stores in
communities coast to coast, the company's ongoing recruiting efforts focus in
part on the Traditionalists (born between 1933 and 1945) and Baby Boomers
(born between 1946 and 1964) who represent approximately half of the company's
associate workforce.
"Whether it's a career choice, a second family income, or a solution for
the need for activity or income in retirement, more 50-plus Canadians are
seeing a job at Wal-Mart as a great option," said Karen Casey, Wal-Mart
Canada's senior vice president of People. "In return, we understand the value
of the experience and the dedication they bring to their work and to our
stores."
"Wal-Mart's inclusion on this list reflects its ability to find
interesting and effective ways to engage and retain a growing 50-plus
workforce," said the Workplace Institute's Barbara Jaworski, founder of the
awards and author of KAA-BOOM! How to Engage the 50-Plus Worker and Beat the
Workforce Crisis. "Everyone knows about the greeter role and its popularity
among 50-plus Wal-Mart associates. But not everyone realizes the steps
Wal-Mart has taken to attract associates of all ages and to keep its retention
rate among the best in the marketplace."
