"Volunteers are the heart and soul of building a better Toronto"

Habitat for Humanity Toronto celebrates volunteer contributions during National Volunteer Week

TORONTO, April 11 /CNW/ - It's National Volunteer Week and Habitat for Humanity Toronto will pause to give special thanks and recognition to the more than 10,000 volunteers per year who contribute their time and talent to the charity. From April 10-16, 2011, Habitat Toronto volunteers will be celebrated for their donation of almost 100,000 hours of labour, skill and commitment to help the organization continue its mission. Their passion, action and impact - the theme of this year's National Volunteer week - ensure Habitat for Humanity Toronto can continue to build safe and decent homes in partnership with families living in need.

Passion.
"Volunteers are the heart and soul of Habitat Toronto," says Neil Hetherington, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Toronto. "Their ongoing commitment to our partner families serve as the foundation for our organization. Through their contribution of over 20,000 shifts in helping to build better homes and communities in Toronto, volunteers are our city's leading agents of social change."

Action.
"At Manulife, we believe volunteering is one of the strongest ways we can build a better future for everyone," says Sarah Saso, Director of Community Relations at Manulife Financial who is Habitat for Humanity Toronto's Volunteer Program Sponsor. "When Canadians give their time and their talents, even an hour at a time, incredible things can happen. Many of our employees volunteer their time to swing a hammer at Habitat Toronto build sites each year. With this in mind, Manulife Financial is proud to sponsor the Habitat for Humanity Toronto Volunteer program."

Impact.
Habitat for Humanity Toronto claims that without the vital support of their volunteers, the charity could not provide affordable homeownership for more than 225 women, men and children this year. It's through these donated hours hundreds of Torontonians give on their build sites, office and ReStores each year that save the charity thousands of dollars in salaries and expenses, thus helping them to continue to build homes for families living in need. The impact they make on the lives of Habitat Toronto's partner families is certainly worthy of celebration.
