Jamieson recommends taking vitamins as a preventative health measure
TORONTO, March 26 /CNW/ - Jamieson Laboratories, Canada's leading
manufacturer of natural health products, today announced that despite the
millions of dollars spent annually by all levels of government to encourage
proper nutrition, most Canadians are ignoring the importance of following a
balanced diet - making daily vitamin supplement consumption an absolute
necessity to optimize their health and wellbeing.
While Canada's Food Guide now recommends 7 to 10 servings of fruits and
vegetables daily for adults, the 2004 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS)
indicates that Canadian consumption is averaging about 5.2 servings daily. In
fact, a majority of consumers eat fewer than five servings per day.
Those few Canadians who do follow Canada's Food Guide are challenged by
the fact that the nutrient quality of imported fruits and vegetables,
particularly during the Winter months, does not generally achieve recommended
levels and, further, that the purity of these foods continues to come under
question - adding further credence to the requirement for a daily vitamin
Vitamin supplementation can play a key role in complementing fruit and
vegetable consumption. The importance of multivitamins is reflected in the
recently revised Canada's Food Guide, which now recommends that adults over
the age of 50 take a daily Vitamin D supplement of 400 IU. The new Guide also
recommends that women of childbearing age take a daily multivitamin containing
0.4 mg of folic acid, while pregnant women must also ensure that their
multivitamin contains a sufficient amount of iron.
A study published in 2002 in the Journal of the American Medical
Association, also recommends that all adults take a daily multivitamin in
addition to eating a healthy diet. (Fletcher RH & Fairfield KM (2002).

"While it is important to follow a balanced diet based on Canada's Food
Guide, it can be challenging for many people to do so on regular basis.
Jamieson Vita-Vim multivitamin formulas provide a full-spectrum of essential
vitamins and minerals that can help fill the gap of missing nutrients in the
diet. Vita-Vim formulations are developed based on the latest research about
essential nutrients and their importance to health," said Michelle Ginsler,
Registered Dietitian, Jamieson Laboratories.
"Vitamins are an insurance policy that your body is getting the nutrients
it requires," said Dr. Penny Kendall-Reed, Naturopathic Doctor & Clinic
Director, Urban Wellness Clinic. "The truth is that our bodies do not produce
vitamins, yet they are vital nutrients for maintenance of good health."
"Numerous studies have shown the benefits of vitamin intake for
preventative health," added Dr. Kendall-Reed. "It is possible to ingest
certain vitamins through food intake, but even with a well balanced diet, it
may not be possible to get enough."
