Visa Celebrates Credit Education Week

Sponsorship of Week-Long Event Demonstrates Visa's Ongoing Commitment to Educating Canadians on Financial Literacy

TORONTO, Nov. 14, 2011 /CNW/ - Visa Canada announced today that it will sponsor Credit Education Week Canada 2011 (CEWC 2011), which is scheduled for November 14th - 18th. Reinforcing Visa's global commitment to financial literacy, the company believes it is essential to contribute to, and participate in, important conferences like CEWC 2011. This is the fifth consecutive year in which Visa Canada has supported Credit Canada in its efforts.

"Visa Canada has provided financial literacy resources for over a decade to help Canadians learn basic skills like financial management, goal setting and budgeting," said Melissa Cassar, head of corporate and public affairs, Visa Canada. "Credit Education Week is an ideal opportunity for us to show our dedication to enhancing the level of financial literacy in Canada."

CEWC 2011 will have a special focus on the 'sandwich generation' which refers to the generation of people who are not only caring for their aging parents but are also supporting their children financially. Participation in many CEWC 2011 events is free and brings together leading experts from the financial services industry, consumer advocacy groups, community organizations and government to help teach professionals, front line service providers and individuals best practices in financial education.

There will be events running throughout the week, across Canada, and will include a professional development day in Toronto on Tuesday, November 15th. This development day provides the opportunity for all professionals, front line service providers, new immigrants and community members to build and strengthen their knowledge in the area of government resources, services and tools through discussions and question periods with speakers from the Investor Education Fund, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, and SEDI.

In addition to sponsoring CEWC 2011, Visa Canada will award $1,000 to the winner of a Grade 12 essay writing contest where students write on an inspiring story of how they misused money and what they learned from it. The scholarship award will be presented at the conference's gala dinner.

As part of its goal to promote financial literacy in Canada, Visa Canada developed and maintains Practicalmoneyskills.ca, a site that provides consumers, parents, educators and students access to free educational resources, including cost calculators, budget templates, games, quizzes, and more. Practical Money Skills materials are also available online in English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Punjabi and Chinese. Additionally, Visa Canada has worked with teachers to develop Choices & Decisions, a program that provides practical, ready-to-use, lesson plans for use in Canadian classrooms.

Financial education has been a global priority for Visa since 1995. Visa has an ambitious plan to share its financial literacy programs with 20 million people worldwide by May 1, 2013 and is already over half way to reaching that goal.
