STORY SUMMARY: On Wednesday, January 23rd, the Ontario Power Authority
(OPA) will announce the outcome of the first year of the OPA's Great
Refrigerator Roundup - one of 18 it is now operating to prompt a "culture of
conservation" in Ontario.
The program exceeded its first-year target in 2007 and has just surpassed
another significant milestone as year two begins. It sees old, inefficient
appliances removed, ripped apart, crushed, and recycled - leading to permanent
energy savings.
B-roll footage of the decommissioning process is available following a
media briefing at Queen's Park at 11:15 a.m.

    SHOT LIST:

    - Refrigerators arrive for decommissioning
    - All loose plastic and aluminum is removed and separated from the
refrigerator. The plastic and aluminum is recycled and reused.
    - Freon is extracted from the refrigerator. The Freon is collected and
disposed of by an appropriate facility.
    - A hole is drilled into the back of the refrigerator's compressor. The
compressor oil is removed by putting the refrigerator onto a "Tipper
        Table".
    - Units with polyurethane foam insulation have their compressors
        removed.
    - Units arrive at the bailing machine for crushing and sorting. The
bales are then disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.
